I received this opinion piece by Elie ElHadj and agreed to publish it, although I have edited it for length. You can read his original full article here. I hesitated before agreeing to publish it because the opinions expressed are controversial and stated powerfully; the open discussion of religious topics is often frowned upon in Syria because of the potential for stirring up sectarian hard feelings.

مثلما للأوطان فضل على المبدعين، فللمبدعين فضل على الأوطان أيضا..
تلك حقيقة يفترض ان تحسب للأشخاص الذين حققوا للأماكن التي ولدوا فيها او عاشوا فيها، ثم كتبوا عنها ولفتوا الأنظار اليها، وأصبحت معروفة لدرجة أن يقبل عليها السياح أو يذكرونها في مؤلفاتهم، او يتحدثون عنها في جلساتهم ومحضراتهم. بما يمكن ان اسميه بـ «السياحة الثقافية».
كثيرة هي المدن الصغيرة التي تنفق عليها وزارات أو ادارات السياحة المبالغ الطائلة للتعريف بها، ثم يأتي كاتب أو شاعر او فنان تشكيلي، ليشهرها بقصيدة واحدة، او بنص سردي او لوحة.
كثيرة هي المدن التي كانت صغيرة بجغرافيتها قبل ان تتوسع على يد مبدعيها، وكثيرون من خارج هذه الاماكن اصبح لديهم شغف وتوق لرؤية تلك الامكنة التي عرفوها من خلال المبدعين.
مناطق مثل خان الخليلي في مصر، بين القصرين، السكرية، لا ينكر دور نجيب محفوظ والمبدعين بمصر في اشهارها، وخان الحرير في حلب الذي كتب عنه الروائي نهاد سيريس، وحي «سوهو» الذي أبدع في وصفه الكاتب الانكليزي كولن ولسون، والغورنيكا من خلال لوحة الفنان بيكاسو، و«تاهيتي» من خلال لوحات غوغان التي اشتهرت بـ «نساء تاهيتي». بل ان داغستان، على قلة المتحدثين بلغتها، أوصلها الشاعر رسول حمزاتوف الى العالمية. وحتى الاندلس، كان للمفكرين امثال ابن رشد والشعراء امثل ابن زيدون ولسان الدين الخطيب والاعمى التطيلي، وغيرهم دور هائل في الترويج لتلك البلاد، بما لا يقل عما حققه السياسيون، بل ما حصل هناك كان على العكس، فقد عمّر المبدعون الاندلس وخربها السياسيون!.
كثير من السياح في دول العالم عندما يزورون مدينة ما، يسألون عن الاماكن التي كان يرتادها مبدعو هذه المدينة، وعن المقاهي او اماكن عملهم. اكثر مما يهتمون بمصادر دخلها القومي.
لذلك فمن الوعي السياحي على الاقل -كوننا في شهر السياحة- ان لم نقل الوعي الفكري او الثقافي، ان تعامل الأوطان المبدعين الذين ساهموا في عملية التنمية السياحية، معاملة تليق بوهجهم، وان تحتفي بهم احياء، لا ان تنتظر سيارة دفن المبدعين!

من أكثر الذين أجادوا وصف الاماكن، في الوقت الحالي، الروائي جمال الغيطاني، سواء من خلال ما يكتبه اسبوعيا في صحيفة «الراي» او من خلال محاضرة القاها مرة حول كتاب «وصف مصر»، الذي وضعته الحملة الفرنسية بقيادة نابليون، عن تلك الحقبة من تاريخ مصر، كان شرح الغيطاني عن الامان كما لو كان دليلا ثقافيا، يزرع الشوق في قلوب الحاضرين -في مكتبة البابطين المركزية للشعر العربي- لزيارة تلك الأماكن، اي بعلم «البزنس» السياحي الحديث يحق للغيطاني الحصول على «كومسيون» عن كل سائح..

At an indeterminate point in Aleppo’s main market street, the Souq al-Attarine, but most likely somewhere between observing a pair of goat testicles dangling off a skinned carcass, and running into a bloody, matted camel head hanging on a large metal hook, I lose my appetite. This is a shame, because we are due to lunch at Bazar al-Charq, a restaurant known for its myriad preparations of the ground-meat dish kibbeh, itself an Aleppan speciality.

في 22 فبراير (شباط) لعام 1958 تحقق أول انتصار وحدوي حقيقي لحركة القومية العربية، بعد نضال طال نصف قرن من الزمن، وقامت وحدة القطرين مصر وسورية، في إطار "جمهورية عربية متحدة". قامت دولة للأمة، لكل الأمة العربية وقضايا الأمة، ولتكون قاعدة انطلاق والجسر الذي تعبر عليه شعوب الأمة نحو الوحدة العربية الشاملة.هذه الوحدة، وهذه الدولة القومية الموحدة للأمة العربية لم تعمر إلا ثلاث سنوات وسبعة أشهر، فقد انفصم عقد تلك الوحدة، بل جرى اغتيالها في 28 سبتمبر (ايلول) عام 61 بالتآمر والغدر وبتواطؤ من كل القوى المعادية للأمة، لوجود هذه الأمة أو لنهوضها وتقدمها، من داخلها وخارجها.الوحدة والطريق إلى الوحدة في الحقبة الناصريةأياً ما كانت التقييمات المختلفة التي جاءت لتلك الحقبة من حياة أمتنا العربية والتي عاشتها تحت أعلام الثورة الناصرية، فإنها تبقى حقبة النهوض البارزة في هذا العصر لأمتنا، ويبقى عنوانها الكبير النضال في سبيل تحررها وتقدمها ووحدتها . وتلك تبقى شهادة التاريخ ، كما قال جمال عبد الناصر في آخر كلماته إلى الأمة، شهادة " مبرأة من العقد ومن الأهواء ومن التحزب ومن النسيان . "ونحن نسميها حقبة ناصرية، بالنسبة للأمة وشعوب الأمة وحركة القومية العربية عامة، تلك الحقبة من تاريخ نضالنا العربي، التي كان المدخل إليها قيام حركة الضباط الأحرار بثورتهم الوطنية في 23 يوليو عام 52...

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Much of the world knows Petra, the ancient ruin in modern-day Jordan that is celebrated in poetry as "the rose-red city, 'half as old as time,'" and which provided the climactic backdrop for "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
But far fewer know Madain Saleh, a similarly spectacular treasure built by the same civilization, the Nabateans.
That's because it's in Saudi Arabia, where conservatives are deeply hostile to pagan, Jewish and Christian sites that predate the founding of Islam in the 7th century.
But now, in a quiet but notable change of course, the kingdom has opened up an archaeology boom by allowing Saudi and foreign archaeologists to explore cities and trade routes long lost in the desert.
The sensitivities run deep. Archaeologists are cautioned not to talk about pre-Islamic finds outside scholarly literature. Few ancient treasures are on display, and no Christian or Jewish relics. A 4th or 5th century church in eastern Saudi Arabia has been fenced off ever since its accidental discovery 20 years ago and its exact whereabouts kept secret.

أضواء على العلاقة المتوترة بين الريف والمدينة

تأخذ العلاقة بين الريف والمدينة في الدول الأقلّ نموا، وبينها سورية، أهمية متزايدة بسبب التوتّر المستمرّ في هذه العلاقة من ناحية وهجرة الريف إلى المدينة من ناحية ثانية. وتعود أسباب التوتّر بين الريف والمدينة إلى جملة من العوامل لعلّ أهمّها دور كلّ منهما وحصّته من عملية الإنتاج.
لقد عرفت الدول الغربية تطوّرا اقتصاديا تُجسّده قاعدة "من الثروة إلى السلطة" التي حجّمت دور الدولة إلى حدّ ما في عملية التوزيع والتبادل. بسبب ذلك، بشكل عامّ، خفت حدّة التوتر إلى حدّ كبير، بينما لا يزال التوتّر على أشده في البلدان الأقلّ نموا ذات البنية المغلقة الراكدة. تلك الدول الاستبدادية كانت وراء تجديد التوتّر مع أنّ مدنها أقدم وأعرق من المدن الغربية .
سوريا مثلا، بلد حضاريّ عريق في هذا الجانب، ففيه تشكّلت أقدم المدن في التاريخ، وهذا ما دعا مدير متحف اللوفر سابقا اندريه بارو ليقول: "إنّ على كلّ إنسان متمدّن أن يقول : إنّ لي وطنين، وطني الذي أعيش فيه وسوريا." بيد أنّها رغم ذلك التاريخ، لم تستطع تجاوز ذلك المستنقع، والتوتّر بين مدنها وأريافها على أشدّه في القرن الواحد والعشرين، مع فارق بسيط عن الماضي وهو أنّ المبادر لتأزيم العلاقة هو الرّيف وليس المدينة، أي هجوم الريف على المدينة بدلا من هجوم المدينة على الريف في السابق – ترييف المدن بدلا من تمدين الريف -
سنتتبع تلك العلاقة المتوتّرة في محافظة عريقة من محافظات سوريا عروس الساحل السوري- اللاذقية.
إنّ موقع اللاذقية الجغرافي(1) أثّر تأثيرا كبيرا على الوضع السكاني؛ من حيث اختلاف الأديان والمذاهب والأعراق، فهي منفذ بحريّ لسورية، وسورية كانت دوما هذا الموقع الهامّ الذي تلاقت فيه أجناس وأمم مختلفة عبر التاريخ. وحسب إحصاء رسميّ تمّ في عام 1866 م كان عدد سكان مدينة اللاذقية 11200 نسمة وفيها 19 مسجدا وسبع كنائس وستّ حمامات، وكانت فيها قنصليات لكلّ من فرنسا وانكلترا وروسيا وايطاليا واسبانيا والدانمرك ، وفي عام 1865 قسّمت المدينة إلى ستة أحياء هي الشيخ ضاهر – العوينة- القلعة – الصباغين –الصليبة – الشحادين، وأصبح كلّ حيّ يشكّل دائرة على رأسها لجنة مؤلّفة من مختار وأربعة أعضاء .
أوائل القرن العشرين أصبحت اللاذقية لواء أو سنجقا ملحقا بولاية بيروت تضمّ أربعة أقضية. ولم يكن لواء اللاذقية يختلف كثيرا عن الألوية العربية تحت الحكم العثماني، حيث التوتّر على أشدّه بين الريف والمدينة: يسكن المدن عائلات ميسورة موالية للحكم العثماني ومتعاونة معه، سواء كانت إقطاعية أم حرفية، ويسكن الريف فلاحون فقراء يقع على عاتقهم دفع الضرائب أو الالتحاق بالخدمة العسكرية حسب ما تقتضيه مصلحة السلطنة .
خرج الأتراك من مدينة اللاذقية بعد أربعة قرون، وجاء بعدهم الفرنسيين واحتلّوها لفترة قصيرة من الزمن كانت مغايرة في كلّ شيء عن فترة العثمانيين، فالفرنسيون جلبوا معهم الانتخابات النيابية، ومالوا باتجاه الأقليات المضطهدة أيام العثمانيين. وكان المستفيد الأكبر من الاحتلال الفرنسي في اللاذقية هو أبناء الريف العلوي فيها، حيث لم يعد العلويون مستهدفين من قبل المسلمين لكونهم "رافضة" و"خطيرين على الإسلام، بل أصبحوا كغيرهم من أبناء الوطن المحتلّ.
اتّخذ التوتّر بين الريف والمدينة في اللاذقية فترة الخمسينات شكلا كلاسيكيا مستمدّا من واقع الريف والمدينة وتراث وتقاليد وعادات وقوّة كلّ منهما على الأرض .
واللوحة التالية جرى شبيه لها في كلّ أسواق المدن الساحلية أواخر الأربعينات من القرن الماضي، وهي تُعبّر اصدق تعبير عن شكل ذلك التوتر.
أبو سميع فلاح فقير من إحدى القرى المجاورة لمدينة جبلة، كانت عائلته تنام كثيرا من الليالي الباردة دون عشاء من شدّة الفقر، حتى اهتدى إلى الاتّجار بالبيضة بين القرية والمدينة، وتجارته فيها جعلته محسودا من كلّ أهل القرية، ومكّنته من تشييد أوّل غرفة مسقوفة بالاسمنت فيها. كلّ يوم سبت له رحلة إلى المدينة هو وحماره المسروج بسلتين تحملان البيض الملفوف بالورق كي لا يتكسّر داخل السلة، ولقد ذاق الأمرّين في البداية من زعران السوق، ومحاولتهم مضايقته وقذفه بالفضلات والأوساخ، والسخرية من لهجته وطريقة مشيته . لكنه بالنهاية أصبح جزءا من حركة السوق بشرواله الأسود وقنبازه المخطّط وطاقيته اللبادية، يعود إلى القرية محمّلا بالبخور والحنّاء والتمر والحلاوة، وحتى خبز الفرن الذي يوضع حشوة لخبز التنّور في القرية ويصبح زوّادة للفلاحين في حقولهم.
في إحدى المرّات وصل إلى مشارف المدينة باكرا، دفء الطقس وغزارة العشب أغرياه بربط الحمار في زيتونة على مشارف المدينة بدلا من دفنه داخل خان السوق، حمل السلّتين بين يديه إلى السوق وباع البيضات هناك، ثمّ اشترى بثمنها ما يستطيع، وعاد بحوائجه على عربة - طنبر – ومن بعيد رأى الحمار مقلوبا وقوائمه مشرعة بالهواء وحوله أكوام من الحجارة، أولاد السوق كيف تنادوا إلى الوليمة ومن أين تجمّعوا !! لقد رجموه بها حتى بقروا بطنه وفقئوا عينيه، غادر العربة مسرعا وبدون وعي منه شكّل قنبازه وملأه حجارة وجرى وراءهم، لكنهم اختفوا بين أزقة الحارات فبدأ برشق الحجارة على زجاج النوافذ، ولم يتوقف عنها حتى طلب الأهالي الشرطة، فضبطوه بالجرم المشهود، واقتادوه إلى السجن ليصبح خلف القضبان .
تغيّرت العلاقة بين الريف والمدينة شيئا فشيئا منذ بداية الستينات. وقد بدا التغيّر في البداية وكأنّه لصالح علاقة جديدة أكثر استقرارا وتوازنا وإنصافا للطرفين، بسبب فترة النهوض الاقتصادي الاجتماعي التي عرفتها سوريا كلها بعد التأميم وشقّ الطرق وإقامة السدود وضرب مصالح الطبقات الرجعية، ولكنّ فترة النهوض لم تدم طويلا كما هو معلوم، لتعود العلاقة إلى التوتّر من جديد، على شكل هجوم من الريف على المدينة .
لقد أقبل أبناء الفلاحين في ريف اللاذقية على الانتساب للأحزاب اليسارية، وخاصة الحزب الشيوعي وحزب البعث لأنّها من جهة أحزاب تحرّرية لا تنظر إليهم كأقلية طائفية، ومن جهة أخرى تحضّ على العلم وتساعد من استطاع أن ينال الشهادة الثانوية في الحصول على وظيفة تعصم عائلته من السنوات العجاف التي لا تمطر ولا تجعل أرضهم معطاء، والوظيفة الدسمة في الجيش السوريّ، فقد يحالف الطالب الحظّ ويدخل الكلية العسكرية التي فتحت أبوابها لابن الريف بعد أن عزف عنها ابن المدينة لأنّ حياتها خشنة ولا تناسب ميوله وطباعه. من خلال الجيش والوظيفة وحزب البعث وصل أبناء الفلاحين في ريف اللاذقية إلى أعلى المراتب داخل الجيش والحزب الحاكم، والسلطة في كلّ مكان وزمان مفسدة للثوار، فقد راح الموظّفون الجدد يلهطون من أموال الدولة ما تيسّر تحت بصر القيادة "الحكيمة والشجاعة" وبتشجيع منها أحيانا ليصبح الجميع مدانين وتحت الطلب، ومن لم يطاوعه ضميره للسير في هذا الطريق كان له طريق آخر.
الملفت للانتباه في مسيرة أبناء الريف داخل السلطة؛ هو سلوك أبناء الطبقات الفقيرة الذين انقلبوا على ماضيهم وتنكّروا لأصولهم الطبقية وتفنّنوا في أساليب القمع والوحشية إلى جانب ثرائهم الفاحش، خلاف أبناء الطبقات ذات الحال الميسور نسبيا والتي ظهرت علائم عدة توحي بوخز الضمير لدى الكثيرين منهم، حقّا أنّ المثل الشعبيّ الذي يقول – عديم ووقع بسلة تين – ينطبق عليهم بكل أسف، من آلاف الحوادث اخترنا هذه الحادثة من حياة اللواء محمد الخولي .
بدأ التوتر على يد المؤسسات ذات الامتيازات الجديدة وجلّ أبنائها من الريف، الذين غادروا قراهم نحو المدينة ومعهم امتيازاتهم وسلاحهم. أصبحت النكات والنوادر حول انقلاب النفوذ في السوق لا تعدّ ولا تحصى، عنوانها كيف يُلفَظ حرف القاف فيه، في الخمسينات من كان يعبّر عن زجاجة الماء بقوله (أنينة) يخافه الجميع أمّا في الثمانينات من يعبّر عنها(قنينة ) يخافه الجميع، بالطبع كان التوتّر على أشدّه في السوق فترة الثمانينات معبّرا عنه بظاهرة "الشبيحة" (2). كانت اللاذقية فترة الاحتلال العثماني تئنّ تحت بوط العثمانيين العسكري، وسفر برلك شاهد على ذلك، وحدهم المتعاونون مع الاحتلال والمزيّنون له - بحجّة تبنّيه الدين الإسلامي ومحاولة نشره في العالم - كانوا في حالة عيش رغيدة؛ يسكنون المدينة ويتمتّعون بحماية قوات الاحتلال ويسومون الريف ألوانا من العذاب .
رحل العثمانيون عن اللاذقية، ولكنّ بنية الاستبداد في المنطقة هضمت الحاكم الجديد بن البلد. المدينة بكلّ تاريخها الحضاري والثقافي لم تستطع تجاوز قوانين العثمانيين حتى هذه اللحظة.
التغيير الأساسي الذي جرى في محافظة اللاذقية فترة القرن العشرين هو بانقلاب النفوذ بين أبنائها من المدينة إلى الريف، فأبناء الريف يحظون الآن بحضور اقتصادي وسياسي واجتماعي وعسكري وأمني أكبر من حضور أبناء المدن، فيما عدا ذلك بدت محافظة اللاذقية على أعتاب القرن الواحد والعشرين حزينة جدّا كما في الماضي، كلّ شيء فيها يتمّ من أعلى ودون استشارة أهلها، وكلّ منظماتها ونقاباتها واتحاداتها ونواديها وجمعياتها، تجرى فيها انتخابات صورية معروفة النتائج سلفا، سواء كانت بلدية أم نيابية أم مهنية، والتهاني يتلقّاها ابن القائمة السلطوية فور الإعلان عنها، وقبل أن تجرى الانتخابات الصورية، ولم يحصل في تاريخها الحديث أن نجح شخص مستقلّ في أيّ انتخابات، مهما كان نوعها غير مرضيّ عنه من قبل دوائر الأجهزة الأمنية .
في ظلّ أجواء كهذه، من الطبيعيّ أن يتجلّى التوتّر بين الريف والمدينة، بأشكال تتلاءم مع حجم ونفوذ كلّ طرف فيهما، ليس في اللاذقية بل وفي كل المدن السورية .

دلّت الحفريات التي أجريت في مدينة اللاذقية والمناطق المجاورة لها، أنّ المنطقة كانت مأهولة بالسكان منذ الألف السابعة قبل الميلاد. الشبيحة مصطلح سوري يطلق على مجموعة من المدنين المسلحين الذين كانوا يطوفون الشوارع يفرضون خوة على الناس في مدينة اللاذقية وريفها.

The new James Bond film in 1969 didn’t star Sean Connery, and that was a huge hurdle for poor George Lazenby, who took over the role of 007 for this, his one shot at fame. At the time, OHMSS did poorly at the box office, and its star was clobbered in the press — but years have been kind to the picture, and now most true Bond fans feel that OHMSS is one of the best Bond pictures ever (some think it’s THE best!). Beautifully photographed and containing a script that is perhaps the most faithful to any of Ian Fleming’s original novels, Secret Service is a 007 picture to be re-discovered and held in the highest regard.

Apocalypse Now: A Classic Film and Its Sources, 30 Years On Britannica Blog

Somewhere a soldier, or journalist, or bodyguard, or civilian contractor is writing the ultimate account of an Iraq War in which rock ’n’ rollers with one foot in the grave come of age while killing and being killed. It may be a memoir, it may be a novel. It is likelier a screenplay, since movies are where so much of literature can be found these days.
Whatever its format, that writer has a powerful model in the Anthony Swofford’s death-haunted, heavy metal–tinged Jarhead, which, with the film Three Kings, does the job for our first Mesopotamian war. He—or she—has an even greater model in Robert Stone’s novel Dog Soldiers, a very nearly perfect book. That writer will find Tim O’Brien’s Going After Cacciato and The Things They Carried, Philip Caputo’s A Rumor of War, and Gustav Hasford’s The Short-Timers hard to beat.
None of those books, however, carries quite as much weight page for page, to say nothing of psychedelic weirdness, as Michael Herr’s Dispatches, which appeared 32 years ago and almost immediately changed the way countless Americans viewed the Vietnam War—which, for you young folk, was the Iraq of its day. It exposed the war as a cynical effort on its opening page: “The Mission was always telling us about VC units being engaged and wiped out and then reappearing a month later in full strength, there was nothing very spooky about that, but when we went up against his terrain we usually took it definitively, and even if we didn’t keep it you could always see that we’d at least been there.” In other words, from the air and ground, that temporarily conquered territory was permanently pacified, plowed with salt and napalmed into submission: Vietnam delenda est. Yet the enemy still kept coming, incessantly.
What was spooky was the normality of strange events: of door gunners shooting down women and children, keeping careful count of their kills; of trip-wire booby traps; of explosions and screams in the night; of the transparent lies that people told one another about the war and why it was being fought. If you weren’t confused, Herr assures, if you had some idea of what was happening and where you would be when it did, “the war could cream you.” He adds, “You could be in the most protected space in Vietnam and still know that your safety was provisional, that early death, blindness, loss of legs, arms or balls, major and lasting disfigurement—the whole rotten deal—could come in on the freakyfluky as easily as in the so-called expected ways.” In other words, unless you had that weird light on you, as some lucky warriors did, then all bets were off on how misfortune was going to find you, as it surely would.
Dispatches is journalism, not history, and a very particular kind of journalism at that; a minor controversy roiled not long after its publication when Herr allowed that he had made up some dialogue and invented a character or two. A small matter in the age of gonzo; a smaller matter when a white lie speaks the truth. Thirty-odd years on, it has lost none of its power or urgency—and, sorry to say, none of its usefulness as a primer for how to write a book about war.
Dispatches also gave birth to parts of several Vietnam movies, the most important of which debuted 30 years ago, on August 15, 1979. Apocalypse Now, famously, channels Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness by way of the Mekong River and a cast of unforgettable characters. It is a movie of telling lines, one of them the exceedingly modest but entirely well placed, “The Ohio River, sir?”—to say nothing, of course, of “What are the charges?”
It is a pleasing game for diehard fans to argue whether the director’s-cut version Apocalypse Now Redux is an improvement over the theatrical release of 1979. I hold that it is not: the editors earned their keep on the film, reining in Francis Ford Coppola’s obviously too-large ambitions. In whatever flavor, however, Apocalypse Now is an essential film, and well worth an anniversary viewing today—or any other day in this ever-strange time.
